Van der Meulen

Studio professor

"In Emmanuel Van der Meulen's painting, there is a real, if secret, presence of raw, natural, moving materials: the heavens, water, soil, but also walls and roads. It's just that it's not a direct study, but an approach by analogy, through their equivalent in painting: the colour applied to the surface. In so doing, he invites the viewer to go beyond the recognition of what there is to see on the canvas and to come to the experience of painting itself". (extract from Sophie Kaplan, La couleur, comme la boue et comme l'eau, change toujours un peu en séchant, Galerie Jean Fournier, 2011).

Emmanuel Van der Meulen is a graduate of ENSBA Paris (2001). A former resident of the Villa Médicis (2012-2013), he taught painting for ten years at the École Européenne Supérieure de l'Image d'Angoulême-Poitiers (2013-2024). A doctoral student in philosophy, his research topic is 'Vision and gaze according to Plotinus'. His work is represented by Galerie Allen, Paris.
