A Permanent Revolution: Contemporary Ukrainian Art - meeting with Alisa Lozhkina

Alisa Lozhkina is one of the most important historians, critics and curators of Ukrainian art. She was the director and chief curator of the Mystetskyi Arsenal Museum, the largest museum and exhibition complex in Ukraine, chief editor of Art Ukraine, curator of the exhibition Permanent Revolution. Ukrainian Art Now, which presented three generations of contemporary Ukrainian artists at the Ludwig Museum in Budapest. 

She has published four books, including Permanent Revolution. Contemporary Ukrainian Art and its Roots (translated from Russian by Igor Sokologorsky, Nouvelles Éditions Place, 2020). Born in Kiev, she now lives in San Francisco.

Alisa Lozhkina has curated numerous projects in Ukraine and elsewhere. Since the Mayan Revolution in 2014, she has been interested in the dissemination of Ukrainian contemporary art worldwide, with exhibitions such as Between Fire and Fire, Contemporary Art from Ukraine (Vienna Fine Arts), I am a Drop in the Ocean. Art of the Ukrainian Revolution (Künstlerhaus Vienna, Museum of Contemporary Art Krakow), Long path to Freedom (Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, Chicago, 2015), ART WORK (Mystetskyi Arsenal, Kiev; Dworcowa Gallery, Wroclaw, Poland, 2017). 
She is a PhD student in History at the Central European University in Vienna and a member of the International Association of Art Critics (AICA). 
Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Alisa Lozhkina has written regularly for newspapers and magazines, including the Los Angeles Review of Books, The Art Newspaper, Texte zur Kunst, ArtNews and Afterimage. She has lectured extensively at universities (Stanford, Berkeley, Yale, Arizona State, UMichigan) and institutions, including the INHA and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen. She is currently working on several exhibitions focusing on Ukrainian art for various international institutions.
