Theodore Ushev at work

Theodore Ushev's very distinctive, unique style made him one of the most outstanding animation artists and filmmakers of his generation. Born in Kyustendil, Bulgaria, in 1968, son of a journalist and abstract painter, he graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia. He started out as a poster artist and illustrator, then as an art director for several agencies in Montreal, where he settled in 1999, before devoting himself to animation. From Early in Fall, Late in Winter (2003), selected in competition at the Annecy and Ottawa animation festivals, to Physique de la tristesse (2019), his latest film (official selection for the Oscar for best animated short film, Cristal for short film at the Annecy animation film festival), through his trilogy on power, Tower Bawher (2006), Drux Flux (2008) and Gloria Victoria (2012), his work, by the choice of form, tools and materials used, the editing effects, is resolutely turned towards experimentation.

Film excerpts and discussion with Marie-Pauline Mollaret, film critic and editor in chief of the webzine Écran Noir.
