For a long time, teaching at the Beaux-Arts in Paris was divided into several sections (painting, sculpture, architecture, then engraving), the common denominator of which was learning to draw. However, the transition from the "Petite École", which became the École des Arts Décoratifs, to the École des Beaux-Arts in the 19th century, as well as pedagogical developments designed to provide a broader common training for students in the different sections, such as the so-called "three arts" courses, raise questions about the specialisation offered to young artists. This session will examine these issues from the perspective of students' careers and the teaching methods offered by the École.
