Historians and curators Marcella Lista and Florian Ebner talk with Christian Joschke, art historian and professor at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, on the occasion of the publication of Formations en mouvement, which gathers the writings of the artist and director Hito Steyerl, published by the Centre Pompidou.
With her singular language mixing satire and critical essay, the work of the German artist Hito Steyerl has acquired a notable international recognition in recent years. Stemming from a very personal look at documentary film, this work has been developing since the turn of the 2010s in the form of immersive video and multimedia installations, attached to a spirit of research and experimentation. If Hito Steyerl employs the most recent technologies, it is to better question their power of hold on the public and its capacity to reshape in a subterranean way what takes the place of "reality".
Marcella Lista is an art historian and curator since 2016 at the Musée national d'art moderne-Centre Pompidou, in charge of the Video, Sound and New Media Collection. She recently curated the exhibitions: "Hito Steyerl. I Will Survive: Physical and Virtual Spaces" (2021) with Florian Ebner, "Martha Wilson in Halifax, 1972-1974" (through January 31, 2022). She is preparing a project with the artist Hassan Khan: "Blind Ambition", which will begin in February 2022 at the Centre Pompidou.
Florian Ebner is a photographer and art historian, and is the curator responsible for the photography collection at the Musée national d'art moderne - Centre Pompidou. His work covers modern photography, photography since the 1970s and contemporary photography. Recently, he curated "Calais: Witnessing the 'Jungle': Bruno Serralongue / Agence France Presse / The Inhabitants" (2020) and, with Marcella Lista, "Hito Steyerl. I Will Survive: Physical and Virtual Spaces" (2021) at the Centre Pompidou. He is currently preparing, with Angela Lampe, a project on August Sander and the German New Objectivity.
Christian Joschke teaches art history at the Beaux-Arts de Paris.
