"The price of democracy".
Julia Cagé, a graduate of the Ecole Normale Supérieure and Harvard University, Julia Cagé winner of the Best Young Economist 2023 Prize awarded by "Le Monde" and the Cercle des économistes (ex aequo with Vincent Pons professor at Harvard) is a professor of economics at Sciences Po Paris, co-director of the "Evaluation of Democracy" section of the Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire d'Evaluation des Politiques Publiques (LIEPP), and a researcher affiliated with the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), where she directs the "Media Plurality Resarch Policy Network". A specialist in political economy, organisational economics and economic history, she is interested in the media, and in particular in the impact of competition and the introduction of the Internet on the quality of information produced and political attitudes. Her research also focuses on the financing of democracy, including political parties and election campaigns, in Western Europe and the United States, from a comparative perspective.
Her work has been published in leading economics journals, including the American Economic Review and the Review of Economic Studies, and in numerous edited volumes. She is the author of several books that have been translated into some fifteen countries, including Saving the Media. Capitalisme, financement participatif et démocratie (Le Seuil, 2015) and Le prix de la démocratie (Fayard, 2018).
She has been President of the Société des Lecteurs du Monde since 2020 and was a member of the Board of Directors of Agence France Presse from 2015 to 2022. In 2021, she was awarded the Arne Naess Chair in Global Justice and the Environment (University of Oslo).
